The Great Awake

18/05/2012 in Music, Punk

Not that long ago I found myself as the Lansdowne ready to watch the Chainsaw Hookers, but before them was something I didn’t expect to see. The Great Awake remind me of a pop punk version of Propaganhi or A Wilhelm Scream, when they started playing all I wanted to do was drink and throw tables around the place yelling out “fuck the police” but then I relaised, if I did that, the police would actually show up and Chainsaw Hookers would proabably come at me with a chainsaw, not a hooker… So I just enjoyed the show and I suggest you do the same with this article. Check them out!

For people that don’t know you guys, introduce yourselves.

Hey we’re The Great Awake, we play melodic punk rock and we’re from Sydney

What’s happening with The Great Awake right now?

We just released our debut EP a few weeks back at the Annandale and we’re trying to play as many shows as possible.

How long have you guys been playing and how did you meet?

We’ve been playing in different bands in different combinations for a few years its actually how most of us met…. except for Matt and Shifty, they dated the same girl and bonded over drinks and war stories one night and never looked back. The great awake has probably been around for a year and a half playing shows before this EP.

Why The Great Awake, what does it mean?

A collective love of The Flatliners album. Plus, being awake is pretty good.

Who writes the tunes, what do you guys mainly sing about?

The song writing is a pretty collective process but generally involves Matt or Damien bringing something to the table and jamming it out and seeing how it evolves. Matt and Damien have a special songwriting technique that involves Matt writing something one week and forgetting it by the next.. Damien always remembers. We sing about all sorts of things but its usually pretty down to earth stuff… traveling, girls, other music, people we like, people we don’t.

Any new release coming out soon?

We just released our debut EP. Its self titled and you can download it from our Bandcamp or you can by a copy off us at a show.

What video clips online we should check out?

Not just yet, but we wish we could play guitar like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcA0Ug2gKQ4

What shows are happening/coming up?

We’re in the process of booking shows at the moment but if you’ve got one you want us to play just hit us up!

Who is you’re fav band you’ve shared the stage with, so far?

Well we’ve played on the same stage as Polar Bear Club, just not on the same night. Distance are a great band and a great bunch of guys from Newcastle with big things in their future, check them out.

10.Got just one good story you can share from previous shows?

At our ep launch we had a Fox shaped piñata to celebrate but had nothing to hang it from so Glen just held the thing himself. This resulted in Glen falling off the stage onto the poor girl hitting the Piãta and taking the fold back with him.. he doesn’t leave the drum kit as much anymore.

…. What about an embarrassing one?

I’d say that was pretty embarrassing for Glen, we had a good laugh though.

Which bands have influenced your sound?

Millencolin, Polar Bear Club, Bodyjar, The Wonder Years.

Give us your top 10 albums of all time.

Woah! this is a tough one and may cause some arguments so I’ll give the short list of albums we can agree on… Blink-182 Dude Ranch, Millencolin Pennybridge Pioneers, Unwritten Law self titled, Motion City Soundtrack Commit this to Memory, The Living End Self titled

Got any shout outs you want to give?

Get on the Distance bandwagon… now! and if your ever down south check if Lower Coast Skies are playing somewhere
