Symphony of Distraction – Call It Off, John
15/06/2012 in CD Reviews, Music
Symphony of Distraction is basically your favourite skate punk band on fast forward. With a heap of brilliant melodic lines and a singer with a set of vocal chords that would make most punk bands envious, Symphony of Distraction are definitely something to keep your eye on. In 2010 Symphony of Distraction leased an EP, ‘Pudwack’, that captured the hearts of all who lent it their ear, but definitely didn’t get around to securing the band a huge fan base. However, signs point to their next release going above and beyond anything they’ve done before.
‘Call it Off, John’ is their latest album and whilst it’s definitely not a record breaker, it sure is brimming with potential. It’s jam packed with speed of light guitar rhythms and drum riffs that will have even the smallest and most indifferent crowds going insane. The album kicks off with ‘The Last Thing I Remember’, a speedy track with a vocal line that spends the majority of the song struggling to stay on the surface and be heard above thick layers of guitar drum patterns. Despite this battle for dominance, it’s a quality track that will have you hooked and prepared you for the rest of the album that will soon have a permanent spot in your playlist. ‘Call it Off John’ includes lyrics that cover almost every emotion and experience under the sun from exhaustion to love and touching on anger, self-deprecation, alcoholism and hatred. They’re definitely a band you can rely on to change your mood in a second.
‘Pardon My French’ is one song that definitely stands out with a speedy underlying beat that will have your blood pounding and even the most awkward teenager letting loose on the dance floor. ‘End of The World’ is another highlight of the album. It’s a song with a guitar solo that is just a few levels down from having you on your knees and worshipping the guitarist. It’s a track that takes the band’s normal foundation of guitar riffs, drum beats and ices the already delicious cake with overlayed vocals, a manufactured echo effect and a Darth Vader style voice over that will have the song engraving a permanent place for itself in your mind.
This band is steadily edging closer to the spotlight with every new release and it shouldn’t be too long before their music gets the attention it deserves.
