Red Tape Parade from Germany know how to mix hardcore and melodic punk. The band is currently touring with Boysetsfire and Hot Water Music and recently shared the stage with bands such as Lagwagon and the Bouncing Souls. Read more about their tour impressions below.

Bevor wir ins Detail gehen, stellt euch doch mal kurz vor für unsere Leser. Wer ist Red Tape Parade, warum heisst ihr so und woher kommt ihr?

Before we get to the details, please introduce yourself to our readers. Who is Red Tape Parade, why are you called like this and where are you from?

Red Tape Parade ist momentan, nach einigen Besetzungswechseln: Mullah und Flirto an der Gitarre, Oise am Bass, Jeff am Schlagzeug und Wauz (ich) am Gesang. Wir haben uns nach einem Song der großartigen Sub Pop-Band Seaweed benannt, die ich an dieser Stelle auch jedem unbedingt ans Herz legen möchte. Wir kommen alle ursprünglich aus Bayern, sind aber mittlerweile über die ganze Republik verteilt.

After some line-up changes, Red Tape Parade currently is: Mullah and Flirto at the guitars, Oise playing bass guitar, Jeff at the drums and Wauz (that’s me) doing the vocals. We named ourselves after a song of the legendary sub pop-band Seaweed, a band that I recommend to everyone. Originally, we all come from Bavaria, but we all live scattered across Germany now.

 

Vielen Dank dafür. Ihr habt momentan eine kleine Tourpause, bevor es im Juni zusammen mit u.a. Hot Water Music und Boysetsfire auf die Bühne geht… und diesen Monat als auch im April seid ihr mit den Bouncing Souls und Lagwagon unterwegs gewesen. Wenn ich mir diese Bandnamen anschaue, kann ich nur sagen, nicht schlecht. Da wurde doch sicherlich ein Traum Wirklichkeit oder?

Thanks for that. You have a little break at the moment before you go on stage again in June with bands like Hot Water Music and Boysetsfire…. and also, in this month as well as in April you’d been touring with Bouncing Souls and Lagwagon. When I look at those band names, I can only say: not bad. Has a dream come through?

Auf jeden Fall. Irgendwie kommt es mir total surreal vor, wenn ich so auf unsere Tourdates schaue. Das hätte mir mal einer vor 15 Jahren sagen sollen. Wir sind mit all diesen Bands groß geworden und sie haben uns teilweise massiv beeinflusst. Wir sind schon eine Band, die diesbezüglich sehr viel Glück hat. Unsere Bookingagentur Destiny macht aber auch echt hervorragende Arbeit.

Definitively. This is absolutely surreal for me when I look at our tour dates. Someone should have told me that 15 years ago! We grew up with all those bands and they partly influenced us heavily. We’re a band that has been very lucky in that respect. But our booking agency Destiny does a really good job too.

 

Wie waren denn die Auftritte mit Lagwagon und Bouncing Souls?

How were the gigs with Lagwagon and Bouncing Souls?

Großartig! Ein tolles Gefühl mit so unglaublichen Bands mehrere Abende hintereinander die Bühne zu teilen. Was mich wirklich sehr gefreut hat, war, dass bei den Bouncing Souls Dates noch The Menzingers dabei waren, die nicht nur eine meiner momentanen Lieblingsbands sind, sondern dazu auch noch echt Super-Typen. Ich glaube diese Tour war echt die lustigste und schönste Tour, die wir je hatten.

Awesome! A great feeling to share the stage for several nights with those incredible bands. I was really excited about the fact that we had The Menzingers on board when we toured with the Bouncing Souls. They are not only one of my favorite bands at the moment but also really great guys. I think this tour was the funniest and nicest tour we ever had.

 

Der Song „Anything Else Is Progress” habt ihr mit Joey Cape aufgenommen – wie lief das ab? Also, wie kam es dazu und wie habt ihr den Song zusammen geschrieben/ aufgenommen?

You have recorded the song “Anything Else Is Progress” with Joey Cape – how was that? So, how did this happen and how did you write/ record the song together?

Unser Bassist Oise ist hauptberuflich Tourmanager und hat Joey auf seinen Solo-Touren und später auch Lagwagon gemanaged. Dabei sind die beiden Freunde geworden. Lustigerweise war Oise nie Lagwagon-Fan und auch nicht groß an Joeys anderen Projekten interessiert, aber er wusste, dass Joey und seine Bands immer ein riesen Einfluss für mich waren. Deshalb fragte er Joey, ob er Lust hätte, bei unserem Album mitzusingen, was dieser glücklicherweise bejahte. Uns war wichtig, dass unsere Gastsänger nicht nur einfach etwas nachsingen, was wir ihnen vorlegen, sondern dass sie schon am Songwriting beteiligt sind und so dem Song auch ihre persönliche Note auferlegen können. Joey bekam von uns also den fertigen Song mit der Ansage „Die 2. Strophe gehört dir, mach damit was du willst!“. Joey hat dann in seinem Studio zuhause seinen Part dazu aufgenommen und uns geschickt und wir fanden ihn fantastisch.

Our bass player Oise’s profession is tour manager and he has managed Joey on his solo tours and later also Lagwagon. Both became friends. Funny enough, Oise was never a Lagwagon fan and he was never really interested in Joey’s other projects but he knew that Joey and his bands have always been a big influence for me. That’s why he asked Joey whether he would like to sing on our new album and Joey luckily agreed to that. It was important to us that our guest singers wouldn’t just copy something we wrote for them but that they would take part in the songwriting process and therefore add their personal touch to it. Joey received the produced song from us with the note: “The second verse is yours, do whatever you want with it!” Joey then recorded his part in his studio at home and sent it to us and we loved it.

 

Könnt ihr ein wenig aus dem Nähkästchen plaudern und vielleicht eine lustige oder peinliche Tourstory mit uns teilen?

Could you give us some insights and maybe share a funny or embarrassing tour story with us?

Es gibt einen Haufen lustige Tourgeschichten, aber das Problem bei den meisten: es ist eigentlich nur wirklich lustig, wenn man selbst dabei gewesen ist. Es hat sich beispielsweise mittlerweile zur Tradition entwickelt, dass unser Roadie und Keyboarder Vonni für Geld an unpassenden Orten Baden geht. Auf dieser Tour hat er zum Beispiel mitten in der Nacht in einem riesigen Springbrunnen in Aachen „gebadet“. Ein Video dazu wird bald folgen.

There are heaps of funny tour stories but the problem with the most of them is: it’s actually only funny when you were there. There is for instance this tradition that our roadie and keyboarder Vonni will play for money at inappropriate places. On this tour, he “bathed” in the middle of the night in a huge fountain in Aachen (German city). A video about this will follow.

 

Was steht dieses Jahr denn noch an – vielleicht ein neues Album in der Mache?

What else are you going to do this year – are you probably recording a new album?

Wir arbeiten gerade an einem Album, was für mich immer ein echt schmerzhafter Prozess ist. Ich bin permanent unzufrieden. Unzufrieden mit meinen eigenen Ideen, unzufrieden mit den Ideen der anderen, unzufrieden mit eigentlich allem. Und der Rest der Band muss sich mit meiner Unzufriedenheit rumschlagen, aus der auch ein sehr langsames Arbeistempo resultiert. Es ist echt immer eine große Quälerei, haha. Aber am Ende klappts doch immer irgendwie. Also: ein neues Album ist in der Mache und dann gibts vielleicht noch eine ganz tolle Split-Single, zu der ich leider aber noch nichts verraten darf.

We are currently working on an album which is always quite a painful process for me. I’m constantly unsatisfied. Unsatisfied with my own ideas, unhappy with the other’s ideas, unsatisfied with everything, actually. And the rest of the band has to deal with my dissatisfaction which results in a slow working pace. It’s really a big ordeal, haha. But in the end it always works out somehow. So: a new album is in production and there may be a very nice split-single but I’m not allowed tell you more about this yet.

 

Wie läuft das eigentlich ab, wenn ihr neue Songs schreibt und aufnehmt? Macht ihr das alles zusammen?

How do you actually write and record songs? Are you doing this alltogether?

Aufgrund unserer räumlichen Trennung funktioniert das Songwriting bei uns nur via Email. Mullah und Oise übernehmen das instrumentale Songwriting, das heißt sie schreiben jeweils die Songs und schustern dann mit Jeff Demos zurecht, die ich dann bekomme, um Gesangslinien dafür auszuprobieren. Das klingt zwar irgendwie seltsam für viele Leute, weil es auch so distanziert wirkt, aber erst neulich habe ich mit Oise darüber geredet und wir haben beide festgestellt, dass wenn wir eine Band wären, die ganz normal im Proberaum zusammen Songs schreibt, wir uns schon lange verstritten und aufgelöst hätten haha.

Due to our regional distance to each other, the songwriting happens only via email. Mullah and Oise take care of the instrumental songwriting, which means that they write the songs and then create demos, together with Jeff. I receive those demos in order to play around with the lyrics and melody. That might sound strange to many people since it seems to be so distant, but just recently I talked about this with Oise and we both realised that if we were a band that wrote songs the common way, in a rehearsal room, we already would have had big arguments and broken up, haha.

 

Ihr seid als Hardcore Punkband gestartet, aber mit der Zeit immer poppiger bzw. melodiöser geworden – gefällt euch melodiöser Punk besser, werdet ihr einfach nur älter, ist es zugänglicher, haben euch andere Bands hier sehr beeinflusst oder wie kam es zu dem graduellen Wandel?

You started as Hardcore Punk band but over the time, you have become more and more poppy and melodic – is it because you prefer melodic punk, are you just getting older, is it more accessible, did you get influenced by other bands or why did you change your style gradually?

Ich bin eigentlich schon immer mehr Fan von melodiösem Punk und Pop-Punk gewesen. In den Anfangstagen – als ich noch nicht dabei war – war die Band, die ja einer Idee Oises entsprang wieder in einer richtigen Hardcore/Punkrock-Band zu spielen, viel mehr einem Konzept unterstellt aggressive Musik zu spielen, würde ich sagen. Als ich dann dazu kam habe ich das Ganze schon in eine mehr melodische Ecke gebracht, als angedacht. Und über die Jahre hinweg haben wir uns ganz frei gemacht von irgendwelchen Vorzeichen, sondern schreiben einfach die Songs, die uns einfallen und da gehören richtig ruhige, melodiöse Nummern halt auch dazu wie schnellere, „härtere“ Nummern.

Actually, I always have been a fan of melodic punk and pop-punk. In the beginning – before I joined – was the band focused on playing more aggressive music, I would say. Oise’s idea was to play in a real hardcore/ punkrock band. When I joined, I pushed the whole thing in a more melodic direction. Over the years, we freed ourselves from any leading signs and we simply write songs that we can think of. And quiet, melodic tracks are part of it as well as faster, “tougher” songs.

 

Was ist euer/ dein Lieblingssong von “The Third Rail of Life” und wieso?

What’s your favorite song of “The Third Rail of Life” and why?

Meiner ist definitiv „(always stubborn, sometimes hateful)“. Beim Schreiben von „The Third Rail…“ steckte ich in einer ähnlichen Schaffens- und Sinnkrise wie jetzt gerade vor dem neuen Album und dieser Song hat mich damals förmlich daraus herauskatapultiert. Das ist der eine Song von uns, auf den ich fast ein wenig stolz bin sogar. Ironischerweise konnte ich das Instrumentalstück dazu anfangs überhaupt nicht leiden und wollte die Songidee schon in die Tonne kloppen.

My favorite song is definitively “(always stubborn, sometimes hateful)”. When writing “The Third Rail…” I was in a similar creative crisis as now and this song literally catapulted me out of it. This is the one song of us on which I’m almost a bit proud. Ironically, I couldn’t stand the instrumental part of it in the beginning and was about to dismiss the song idea.

 

Welchen anderen Song (von anderen Bands) hättet ihr gern geschrieben wenn’s da einen gibt)?

Which other song (of another band) would you wish to have written (if there is any)?

Puhh, da gibt es sogar einige, haha. Ich kann jetzt nur für mich selbst sprechen, aber wenn ich mir „Books about Miles Davis“ von The Ergs! anhöre, dann würde ich am liebsten die Musik an den Nagel hängen, weil ich weiß, dass ich nie so einen guten Song schreiben werde, haha. Ich denke die anderen haben auch alle so Songs. Bei Jeff ist es irgendein Meshuggah-Stück (obwohl die für mich alle gleich klingen), bei Oise der gesamte Fugazi-Katalog, bei Mullah Jimmy Eat World oder Suicidal Tendencies und Flirto würde sicher einen Hot Water Music oder The Loved Ones Song nennen.

Phew, there are actually a lot, haha. I can only speak for myself here but when I listen to “Books about Miles Davis” of The Ergs!, I want to quit the job because I know that I will never write such a good song, haha. I think that the others will have songs like this as well. For Jeff, it would be any Meshuggah song (they all sound the same to me), for Oise it would be the whole Fugazi-range, Mullah would prefer Jimmy Eat World or Suicidal Tendencies and Flirto would name a song of Hot Water Music or The Loved Ones.

 

Ich stelle fest, wie Leute um mich herum mit zunehmendem Alter auf einmal Aussagen treffen wie “Nee, auf Konzerte geh ich nicht mehr, aus dem Alter bin ich raus” oder “ja, früher hab ich diese Musik gehört, jetzt brauch ich das nicht mehr” oder “ich höre jetzt lieber House”… was sagt ihr dazu? Ist Punk Rock/ Hardcore nur was für Kids?!

I notice that many people around me say as they get older “Nah, I don’t go to concerts anymore, I’m too old for that” or “yeah, back in the day I used to listen to that music, now I don’t need this anymore” or “I prefer House now”… What do you think of that? Is Punk Rock / Hardcore only for kids?

Ja und Nein. Es ist definitiv eine Jugendbewegung. Aber es ist auch eine Musik mit der man super Altern kann. Wer meint, Punk wäre nur etwas um die jugendliche Rebellion zu untermalen, blendet für mich einen Großteil der ganzen Sache einfach komplett aus. Die meisten meiner momentanen Lieblingsbands sind etwa in meinem Alter, oder gar älter und sie behandeln auch Themen, die ich als Teenager nicht mal hätte nachvollziehen können. Punk für „Erwachsene“ geht also einwandfrei.

Yes and no. It’s definitively a youth movement. But it’s also music you can grow old with. Who thinks that Punk is only something to stress the rebellion of the youth, is completely suppressing a big part of it. Most of my favorite bands are the same age as me or even older and they treat topics that I wouldn’t have comprehended as a teenager. Hence, Punk for “adults” is possible.

Wenn ihr an die australische Musikscene denkt, was fällt euch dazu so ein?

When thinking of the Australian music scene, what comes to your mind?

Australien hat so einige großartige Bands hervorgebracht. Gerade A Death in the Family oder Blueline Medic habe ich in letzter Zeit gerade wieder sehr häufig gehört. Zwei Bands die es leider nicht mehr gibt und die leider auch nie die Beachtung bekommen haben, die sie verdient haben.

Australia has come up with some great bands. I started listening again to A Death in the Family or Blueline Medic. Two bands that don’t exist anymore and that didn’t get the attention they deserved unfortunately.

 

Könnt ihr euch vorstellen, mal hier zu touren, vielleicht mit so Bands wie den Bouncing Souls und/oder Lagwagon?

Could you imagine touring in Australia? Maybe with bands such as Bouncing Souls and/or Lagwagon…

Klar! Allerdings gibts in Australien doch so gefährliche Insekten, oder? Das würde mich abschrecken! Aber Koalas sind wieder ein Grund hinzufliegen. Oder Wombats. Ich liebe Wombats!

Of course! But aren’t there any dangerous inscets in Australia? That would scare me off. But Koalas on the other hand would be reason to come over. Or wombats. I love wombats!

 

Zu guter Letzt würd ich gerne wissen, was ihr unseren Lesern empfehlen möchtet!

As final question I would like to know what you would recommend to our readers!

Bands, die man mal anhören sollte: The Ergs! und Banner Pilot. Zwei hervorragende Beispiele wie Punkrock für über 25jährige funktionieren kann. Bücher, die man Mal gelesen haben sollte: Snow Angels von Stewart O´Nan und The Guardians von Andrew Pyper. Die beiden besten Bücher, die ich in den letzten Jahren gelesen habe, die nicht von Stephen King waren. Filme, die man gesehen haben sollte: House of the Devil und The Innkeepers von Ti West, der beste Horror-Regisseur zur Zeit. Er hat es geschafft die weirde Atmosphäre der 70er und 80er Jahre-Filme in die Neuzeit zu übertragen, ohne dabei zu einer zu offensichtlichen Hommage-Show zu werden.

Bands you should listen to: The Ergs! And Banner Pilot. Two excellent examples for how punk rock works well for more than 25 years. Books you should have read: Snow Angels by Stewart O’Nan and The Guardians by Andrew Pyper. Both are the best books I have read in the past years that weren’t Stephen King books. Films you should have watched: House of the Devil and The Innkeepers by Ti West, the best horror director at the moment. He managed to transfer the weird atmosphere of 70s and 80s movies to the present time without turning it into an obvious homage-show.
