Bellusira – Connection

12/06/2013 in Music

Out from the darkness & into the light come Bellusira. Founding members Crystal Ignite and Mark Dalbeth are no strangers to seeing light through the darkness. From living on the streets to creating a new band from the ashes of the old, Dalbeth & Ignite are true inspiration for any musician that believes in their music and has sweated blood to make it work.Bellusira - Connection

‘Connection’ is the product of the blood, sweat, and tears of Melbourne band Bellusira. After years of throwing everything they’ve got into their music and pushing gigs and publicity, Bellusira – whose name is derived from the Latin words for beautiful and anger - are finally due to release their debut album on June 14th.

Bellusira have already created a phenomenal fanbase in their hometown of Melbourne, as well as a substantial following across each state. Originally created under the moniker Fallacy, Dalbeth and Ignite have been collaborating since 2001. It was after the outfit’s disbandment five years later that the duo re-created the band as Bellusira. Picking up guitarist Vinny Mancuso, and drummer James Mileto along the way, the band have since shared the stage with the likes of The Misfits, and Dead Letter Circus along with many great local bands as well.

Each track on ‘Connection’ is dynamic and raw. The first single “Cachango” is the perfect intro track as it is energetic, powerful, and catchy. ‘Cachango’ is followed up with electrifying tracks like ‘Wake Up’  andWhile some tracks such as ‘Made Of’, and ‘Warrior’ are a little slower than the hard hitting ‘Soul Call’, ‘Culprit’ and ‘Follow’, each one is full of its own visceral emotion. Every track on ‘Connection’ is a fight, but it’s a fight of another kind. This is the fight for survival, the fight to be heard, and the fight that comes from the drive to succeed. Bellusira have proven yet again that there is a solid fan base for female fronted Alternative Rock in Australia. Crystal Ignite’s strong vocals are bold, and fearless. Vinny Mancuso is dynamite on guitar, adding fuel to Crystal’s vibrant vocal power. Mark Dalbeth provides perfectly balanced bass to the beautiful cacophony, and James Mileto’s drumming both tempers and spurs the band on.

‘Connection’ is long awaited, and definitely worth every second it took to get released. Bellusira are definitely a band to watch over the next few years.

Standout tracks include: ‘Cachango’, ‘Follow’, ‘Soul Call’, ‘Warrior’, and ‘Break It’.

Bellusira will be touring Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide until July. Check out their Facebook page for details

‘Connection’ is available for pre-order NOW at JB HiFi, and will be out on sale on June 14th

Brothers Grim and the Blue Murders – Roll It In EP

05/06/2013 in Music

Brothers Grim and the Blue Murders have been rocking the Dirty Blues set for the better part of a decade and have been described by Vulture Magazine as “balancing effortless class with rock’n’roll filth”. They’re currently on a tour to spruik their latest EP ‘Roll It In’, and by the sound of things, they’ll have had the crowd sweating before each set was done. Roll It In EP

I discovered Brothers Grim and the Blue Murders sometime last year when I stumbled upon the talented Jim Batt’s music video for ‘On the Meter’ – one of the songs from their debut LP ‘The Year to Forget’. Needless to say, I’ve been a fan of Brothers Grim and the Blue Murders ever since. So I was absolutely delighted when I heard they were releasing a new EP off the back of their first album.

‘Roll It In’ just about sums up what Brothers Grim and the Blue Murders are all about. That is, sex, drinking, and sweaty dirty Delta Blues. Things I’m sure we all can appreciate. The eclectic mix of mischievousness and the seductive brooding of Delta Blues makes this an EP not to miss.

Don’t be fooled by the Grim name, the tracks on ‘Roll It In’ comprise of no fairy tales. First up, ‘Been A While’ is somewhat jovial, yet not without the typical Brothers Grim melancholia. ‘Ease On In’ is a mix of Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave with James Grim’s own signature Tom Waits style Dirty Blues vocals. Combine this with feisty and soulful guitars by Matt Grim (Australian Guitar Player Magazine’s 2011 ‘Guitarist To Look Out For’), and the stylishly arranged double bass (Dominic Lindus) and drums (Stephen Devlin) and you’ve got a record that will leave men stomping, and women weak at the knees.

The EP is complimented by the band’s swinging cover of ‘Kicked In The Teeth’. Originally pumped out by veteran Rock Gods AC/DC, Brothers Grim and the Blue Murders have twisted a Rock classic into sassy Rockabilly-Blues swagger.

Overall this EP is packed with enough rockabilly blues madness to make listeners – myself included – will be demanding a second album. Their recording are just as body shake inducing as their live shows, the best part being that you can get as sweaty as you want in whatever way you like in the comfort of your own home or car – although if you’re going to do that in your car, at least make sure your engine’s off and the handbrake’s on.

Standout tracks include: ‘Been A While’, ‘Ease On In’, ‘Drown In It’, and ‘Kicked In The Teeth’.

You can catch Brothers Grim and the Blue Murders at their upcoming show at The Reverence Hotel in Footscray on June 14th.

An Interview With Bellusira

03/06/2013 in Music

bellusira

Melbourne Alternative Rock band Bellusira are a true example of a band that puts everything on the line for what they love. I was lucky enough to see their gig at The Roxbury last year. I was even luckier to have a chat with their lead singer-frontwoman-powerhouse Crystal Ignite about the launch of their upcoming – and very long awaited – debut album “Connection” on June 14th. Here’s what Crystal had to say about songwriting, the satisfaction of releasing Bellusira’s debut album, and the connections we all make.

Your debut album’s called “Connection”. Something that pretty much everybody searches for. Explain what the album’s about?

Over the years it has become clear to us how everything is connected, that we are all souls travelling on an earth journey, but we are all made up of the same thing: energy, and when we die it is only our body that dies, the soul lives on forever. This album touches on all different experiences we go through in life, the fight to seek truth, the reality of what truth really is, and how to make it work for us and remain positive in a world that is swarmed with such dense and negative energy . Yet most of us still struggle to find the light and most of us do. We touch on love, heartache, rejection, partying, the need for change and reform, what our life mission is and who we really are and scenarios where those that speak the truth are attacked; but everything we do has a positive resolve.

What kind of connections do you hope your listeners make with this album?

Our lives can be an emotional roller coaster at times and as much as we all try our hardest to stay positive and love, we can also get down and angry about the environment around us, but the strong will always move back to positive and uplift others along the process. Hopefully the listeners will feel the rawness and authenticity of what we are doing and it will help them through various stages of their lives, just like my favourite artist did and still do. Our goal is to connect with the listener’s energy and uplift whilst bringing out all emotions we experience in this earth bound spectrum

Bellusira have put a lot of work into producing “Connection”, risking pretty much everything to get it all happening. How does it feel now that the album’s done and ready for release on June 14?

It is a huge relief and an even bigger sense of satisfaction that we were able to get the album done and completed to a level where we were all happy with it. We are so excited to put it out there and share with the public what we have created.

Describe how a Bellusira song gets written?

As a female vocalist, it is very important to me that I am not just the singer. I take great pride in being a musician and a writer so I am always adamant that I write my own vocals, though I take on production ideas and criticisms from the band. Each song is different in the way that we write it. Five of these tracks were ideas or previous tracks Mark and I had originally conceived that we brought to Vinny and worked on together to make them what they are, which is a representation of all of us. For example, ‘Culprit’ was a verse idea Mark and I had from years ago and Vinny came in and wrote that awesome guitar in the chorus to which we then added our parts. Our track ‘Closer’ was something we wrote with our old guitarist Lee, to which Vinny then added his own guitars to give it his flavour. ‘Made Of’, our ballad, came from an inspiration from two tracks that I love that I showed Vinny, and together we laid down guitar and vocals and then brought it to the band. Vinny is also an avid and talented writer and brought three complete guitar tracks of his to the table, ‘Follow’, ‘Soul Call’ and ‘Break It’, which I then wrote my vocals over and the other members all wrote their parts to. ‘Warrior’ was a track that Vinny, Mark and I jammed on and wrote together at home in our shed and then brought to the studio to jam out as a band. My favorite track ‘Cachango’ came about in practice when Mark and Jimmy came up with the bass and drum part for the chorus, and then Vinny put his guitar in the mix and lead the way with the verse. I then wrote the vocals for the Chorus and took on Vinny’s suggestion to give the verse a “Sting” vibe so it was something that came together very quickly. So each song is different, we all write our own parts and I write the lyrics, but we all check in with each other and draw inspiration from each other while taking on constructive criticism. It’s a real team effort.

What are Bellusira’s plans for the next 6-12 months?

We are about to release our new single ‘Cachango’ followed by a film clip in early June. We release our debut album on June 14th which is available through JBHifi right now for pre-order and will also be available nationwide through all good stores across Australia and iTunes and other digital media nationally. We will follow that up with a late June national tour. In August we will support the amazing Flyeaf (USA) which we are all pumped about. We will also kick off the second leg of the national tour around then with lots of dates to be announced soon. There will also be a few film clips released from the singles from the album throughout the year. All in all, we’ll be keeping nice and busy and productive.

You can pre-order Bellusira’ debut album now at JB Hi-Fi online, and while you’re at it, check out the band’s latest updates and current merch via their Facebook page

Jimmy Eat World Interview – 2013

29/05/2013 in Music

Jimmy Eat WorldThe new album “Damage” will come out in a few weeks. I read that you recorded on tape (and computer) and focused more on performing rather than on sounding perfect, is that right? Why did you do it differently this time, i.e. why tape and focusing on “core values”?

- We recorded drums and some guitars to tape, then dumped those tracks into the computer and did overdubs from there. There is still a lot you can accomplish with computers. Especially saving time and therefore, money. I think the nature of the songs dictated our approach. Which was, if it feels right… it’s right. You do need to check yourself sometimes working in digital because you can get caught up in the video game mode of it all.

What can your fans expect from “Damage”?

- Expect a Jimmy Eat World album. Ha. Seriously, I am not sure what to tell people. It has a little of everything we do.

Do you have a favorite song of the new album?

- Not really. Proud of how everything turned out. I do develop favorites somewhat once we get into playing them live. So far we have only played a few.

The fact that you used tape and hung out at a house to record the new record reminds me of how the Foo Fighters did it with their last album. And it is an awesome album (no pressure there, haha…). Was that inspiring in a way?

- Our studio in Arizona is fairly non-traditional. So it wasn’t much of a shock. But it did feel good to get out for a little bit. The bad thing about working at home is you are never really “gone” to make an album. so, it was inspiring to live in the making of the album for a month.

With a new album on board, there will be a tour coming up of course. Are you touring in the States only or also Europe (and hopefully Australia)?

- We will go everywhere!! Especially Australia. I know everyone tells you this but really, if y’all weren’t so far away i would have relocated there a long time ago.

You guys have also changed the record label – seems like there have been quite a lot of things happening around JEW lately… What are you particularly looking forward to this year?

- I am looking forward to playing again. That is a big part of what we love to do.

As a fan I dare to claim that ‘Bleed American’ was your biggest record… at least that’s what many people would say, I guess. Do you get annoyed by people comparing every other album to that one or are you cool with that?

- I am fine with it. It’s part of the mixed bag you get when you have been around as long as we have. I understand.

Having been around for quite some time now, could you share one or two funny/embarrassing/remarkable (tour) stories?

- Trying to think of something. Hmm. Perhaps it might be remarkable how boring we are that I can’t?

Just before you are about to jump on stage, what are you normally doing?

- Karate kicks and lots of pacing.

Apart from your home town/ state, where do you like playing the most (country, festival, venue…whatever comes to mind) and why?

- The Australian festivals are, no joke. Always the best time!!!

What happens when you are not busy with the music business – what other passions do you have?

- Playing music. Seriously, you never clock out of this gig. I will sit in with buddies, play in cover bands… dj… whatever.

What’s in your CD/MP3 player at the moment?

- I have been really getting into “muchacho” by Phosphorescent. Gnarly shit.

What’s your message/ shout out to the readers?

Thanks for sticking around! Can’t wait to see you in person!
Jim

Senses Fail announce Australian Tour

29/05/2013 in Music

Senses FailSenses Fail have come a long way since their formative years and this is no more evident through their latest record “Renancer.” Undoubtedly and intentionally their heaviest work to date the band aimed to redefine their sound and ultimately themselves which they did to the delight of fans and critics alike.

The band came together in the early 2000′s and soon went on to help define the post-hardcore scene that was coming together around them. They found themselves not only in this band, but forming a community of the creative around them. More recently they encountered changes, just like those that are a part of every day life, which became the starting point for their “rebirth.” After the departure of key member, Zablocki, Matt Smith (Strike Anywhere) took over the reigns the band took to a more collaborative approach, to almost everything, including songwriting.

They changed the space, they changed the dynamic, the changed producers and even dabbled in Spanish as a tribute to their fans and ultimately stand before crowds today reengerised, faster, harder and heavier than they’ve ever been before. Senses Fail will hit Australian shores at the beginning of August for a run of dates bringing their heavier sound and more vigorous outlook to punters for a short time early.

Hits and Pits go for round two!

29/05/2013 in Music

Hits and Pits 2November, 2013, Hits & Pits Touring Mini-Fest is back! This time round its punk-as-fuck. It’s to the point, straight up, with a bunch of international bands and later released Australian talent.

Hits & Pits 2.0. It’s here. It’s real. It’s happening.

Due to the pant-exploding calibre of the line-up the announcement has been split into two rounds but we can tell you that Boysetsfire, No Fun At All, Jugheads Revenge and Off With Their Heads will be joining the party.

Boysetsfire. Enough Said.

Though, if 100 words about this band from Newark is what you must read then you can have it.  Boysetsfire made a name for themselves in the early 1990s and their particular brand of post-hardcore has been grabbing the ears of young and old ever since.  The band may have taken some time off to pursue other exploits but they are just as furious and face-melting as ever.  “While A Nation Sleeps” is slated for a June 11th release through Bridge 9 Records and if the album trailer is anything to go by, there will be no disappointment here.

Sure, they said last time was the ‘last time’ but their love for pristine beaches, sunshine and an average temperature in the double digits meant that Sweden’s No Fun At All would be back to Australia in our lifetimes. They made their own slice of punk rock heaven in Sweden and have been sharing it with the world since 1991, and kicking on (one last time) in 2013.

Since we’re talking about the 1990′s let’s take it right back there to a band making their first trip to Australia, Jugheads Revenge.  No lawsuit can keep a good punk rock band down and after almost a decade of time off the band is back, with a back catalogue of favourite’s and plans to release a stint of 7 inch records in 2013.  They are keeping it fast.  They are keeping us stoked.  They are (finally) coming to Australia!

Last, but nowhere near least, are Minnesota’s own Off With Their Heads.  A band not known to follow the norm; their rotating roster aims to keep the band, and music, as fresh as possible.  The band’s third full-length “Home” has received rave reviews since its release on Epitaph Records earlier in the year and the band are eager to get back to Australia in their latest form bringing their angry, honest, vicious and weighted punk rock with them.

Introducing KANG

29/05/2013 in Music

kang-boys-sydneyYou may or may not remember that we did an exclusive stream of a song called I Heart Radio that ended up making our most shared post of all time and is still rising to this day securing the number one spot.

Why am I introducing this band. Well I’ll tell you a true story that happened to me a while ago. I was living in Newtown (Sydney) quite a while back and this venue just opened at the north end of King Street called the Vanguard. I went in on impulse and was quite amazed to see a pretty little thing playing the piano and making me feel like I want to slash my wrists. I went up to that girl and said “wow, you’re going to be famous one day.” which is funny because one and a half years later I saw her on TV, it was Missy Higgins. Why did I say that? Well back then I had a gut feeling which was the exact feeling I had when I first saw these guys live and played their song “Distress”.

Sure KANG don’t have the wonderful Triple J behind them because that radio station seem to have ditched their roots and now play hipster bullshit music, however I still think there is room for the KANG boys, even in a dead scene.

The KANG boys have just recently has a website created which generally means a band is ready to take the business road. Check out the KANG boys on the web.

KANG have just achieved their target for a Pozible Campaign where they managed to raise $1.2k and have lined up some studio time for their next EP. In the mean time the band are looking for a full time drummer to join the band (busy busy busy) where they have just announced on Gumtree.

Check KANG out today and rub the fact you heard KANG first in some hipsters face with dirt. In a few years you can do it again. Bloody hipsters…

Lita Ford + Vanity Riots

21/05/2013 in Music

Vanity-RiotsVanity Riots launch Ep at Lita Ford after party this weekend!

This weekend, guitar legend and icon Lita Ford will be playing the first of two shows in Australia, at Sydney’s Factory Theatre. If you’ve missed out on tickets or looking to keep the party going after the show, head to the Sly Fox on Enmore Road where the official Lita Ford after party will be held thanks to Blue Palm Touring.

The after party kicks off around 9pm and entertaining you at the venue will be 3 Aussie hard rock bands – Vanity Riots (Syd), Rattlesnake (Syd) and Kill Shott (Melb). The night will be a big one for Sydney female-fronted hard rock act Vanity Riots who are launching their new EP, Ambulance. The EP has already received rave reviews with one critique commenting that the release is “One of the best E.P.s that I’ve heard and one of the best bands that I’ve heard in a long time. Why bands like this remain unsigned and so many lousy bands continue to have success is beyond me.”

So head down to the Sly Fox for plenty of free CDs given away and a chance to win a double pass to Gilby Clark’s (Ex Guns n’ Roses) upcoming show.
