Kunvuk – Consume Rapture

“Consume Rapture” is the second album from Aussie Metalheads Kunvuk, and from the very outset this LP sounds like the band has quite literally taken Groove Metal by its sweat sodden shirt and beaten it within an inch of its life.
A cross between Hell, and the Tasmanian Devil – a species which fans will actually be aiding when purchasing Kunvuk’s latest album – Experimental Groove Metal band Kunvuk have melded so many conflicting ideas together on “Consume Rapture” that it is incredibly difficult to use any single word to describe their sound, or their energy. The best option it seems would be to go by their own definition of Kunvuk as “The energy of a life under attack especially in the context of notional contradiction and dichotomy.” Enough said really.
Blending Groove, frontman David Hart’s demonic screaming, and even a little bit of Funk emanating from Luis Barra’s bass guitar, Kunvuk have created a truly definitive sound, unlike anything I’ve ever heard before. The force of Hart’s lead guitar combined with the coronary embolism that is Virgile Coste’s drumming refuse to hint at a single definitive genre. Tracks like the funky “Nakusa” smolder a bit on the mind, while “Consume” and “Rapture Pt 2 (Respond)” throw some soulful vocals into the mix, and just to take you in a completely different direction “Becoming Monster” will run you over with its sheer ferocity.
Put quite simply, each track is sure to throw you off their scent, ensuring that Kunvuk remain an enigma throughout the album’s duration.
“Consume Rapture” may very well make many listeners feel somewhat uneasy, but something tells me that Kunvuk didn’t intend their follow up to “Immute: Jackals” to be even remotely easy. These guys have created a Funk/Groove/Metal/almost Deathcore fusion that Aussie Metalheads haven’t seen before, and one that should definitely not be missed.
