Kill Your Scene

Postdam is the hometown of Cherry Bomb, an highly-motivated, in English singing punk quartet. Their sound is fresh, straightforward, melodic and full on. I’m pleased to interview Fleisch, the founder and voice of Cherry Bomb.

Note: Blue is German and Black is English…. Just in case you’re thinking WTF.

Ihr seid Punkrocker aus dem schönen Potsdam bei Berlin. Könnt ihr euch fürs internationale Publikum einmal kurz vorstellen – wer ist in der Band, wie seid ihr so drauf und warum/ wie lang gibt’s euch schon?

You are punk rockers from the beautiful city Potsdam (near Berlin). Could you please introduce yourself for our international audience – who is in the band, how do you roll and why/ how long do you guys exist?

Ok, mein Name ist Fleisch und ich spiele Gitarre und singe, Tiffi spielt Drums, Ironboy die Leadgitarre und Dr. Waldi zupft den Bass zusammen sind wir Cherry Bomb aus Potsdam/Germany…seit November 2008 gibts es nun die Band die Tiffi und ich gegründet haben. Wir spielten vorher in verschiedenen Bands und zuletzt zusammen in einer Punkrock-Coverband. Das war zwar echt ne spassige Sache aber wir wollten unbedingt wieder eigenes Zeugs machen und so fing ich wieder an Songs zu schreiben und als Dr. Waldi und Ironboy zu uns stiessen nahmen wir im Frühjahr 2009 unser Debütalbum “Lovers” auf, produzierten und veröffentlichten das komplett in Eigenregie. Von da an war klar das wir mit dieser Band “alt” werden wollen. Wir probten intensiver, schrieben neue Songs und hatten dann das Glück mit Mosh und seinem Label “KnockOut” den richtigen Partner für das zweite Album “Generation Nowhere” gefunden zu haben…und nun versuchen wir einfach so viel Spass wie möglich mit der Band zu haben, ob live oder im Studio. Und wenn wir sogar von Leuten in Australien gehört werden ist das grossartig und macht uns stolz und glücklich!

Alright, my name is Fleisch (= meat) and I’m the vocalist and play guitar, Tiffi is on drums, Ironboy is lead guitar player and Dr Waldi picks the bass. Altogether we are Cherry Bomb from Potsdam/ Germany… The band that Tiffi and I have founded, exists since November 2008. We used to play in different bands before and our last band was a punk rock cover band. That was quite a lot of fun but we were keen to do our own stuff again and so I started writing songs again. After Dr Waldi and Ironboy had joined us, we recorded our debut album “Lovers” and completely produced and released it ourselves. And from that point onwards we knew that we want to grow old with this band. We rehearsed more intensively, wrote new songs and were lucky to find Mosh and his label “KnockOut” for the second record “Generation Nowhere”… and now we are trying to have as much fun as possible with the band, either live or in the studio. And that even people in Australia are listening to our music is awesome and it makes us happy and proud!

 

Inwiefern unterscheidet sich eure Musik von anderen Punkrockbands…also, was macht Cherry Bomb aus?

How does your music distinguish itself from other punk rock bands…so, what characterizes Cherry Bomb?

Das ist schwer zu beantworten, der Begriff Punkrock ist so dehnbar geworden aber wir versuchen nicht besonders speziell zu klingen, wir machen einfach das was sich für uns gut anhört und bei dem wir sagen können ok das ist ein geiler Song! Wir versuchen nicht ein bestimmtes Image zu pflegen oder uns zu verkleiden, wir sind Punkrocker seit unserer frühen Jugend, seit nunmehr 20 Jahren und machen das was für uns richtig ist und wenn die Leute zu unserer Musik feiern, trinken, tanzen oder was auch immer dann ist alles gut!

That’s a difficult question. Punk Rock has become an elastic term, but we don’t try to sound very special. We simply do what sounds good to us, as long as we can say: ok, that’s a wicked song! We don’t try to maintain a certain image/ reputation and we don’t dress up. We are punk rockers since our early youth, for more than 20 years now and we do what seems right to us and when people party, drink, dance or do whatever while listening to our music, then it’s all good!

 

Ihr geht dieses Jahr auf Tour – auf welchen Auftritt freut ihr euch am meisten und warum?

You are going on tour this year – which gig are you looking forward to the most and why?

Ein Highlight wird das ForceAttack Festival werden, es werden Bands dabei sein mit denen wir befreundet sind und mit denen wir mal wieder feiern können und auch Bands die wir schon als Kidpunks gehört haben und nun die Bühne mit denen teilen dürfen. Das kann nur gross werden! Dann freuen wir uns auf ne Minitour(6 Shows) mit Bonecrusher durch Deutschland. Mike und seine Jungs haben wir schon vor ein paar Jahren kennengelernt und wir freuen uns sehr auf ein Wiedersehen zumal Mike bei zwei Shows den Basspart bei uns übernehmen wird…

One highlight will be the ForceAttack Festival as there will be bands playing that we are friends with and that we can party with again…but also bands that we already listened to as kid punks and that we may now share the stage with. That’s going to be big! And then we are looking forward to a mini tour throughout Germany (6 shows) with Bonecrusher. We met Mike and his boys a few years ago and we can’t wait to meet again, especially because Mike will take over the bass at two of our shows…

 

Was war bisher das Highlight in eurer Bandgeschichte?

What has been the highlight of your band history so far?

Eigentlich jagt ein Highlight das nächste, es war das größte das erste Album in den Händen zu halten, noch besser war es das zweite Album in den Händen zu halten und dann noch als Vinyl…yeah!!! Die Bands mit denen man zusammen spielen kann, da meine ich besonders Leatherface und the Generators, die Leute im Publikum die unsere Songs mitsingen, jetzt hier das Interview zu geben…all das sind für uns Highlights!!!

Actually, one highlight chases the other. It was the greatest thing to hold the first album in our hands, but even better was holding the second record in our hands. And then even in vinyl…yeah!!! The bands we went on stage with, especially Leatherface and The Generators…The people in the audience that are singing our songs, giving this interview now…all those things are highlights to us!!!

 

Ihr singt auf englisch. Das ist ja schonmal gut, um international Gehör zu finden. Seid ihr bereits im Ausland aufgetreten? Wenn ja, wie war die Resonanz? Habt ihr euch bewusst dafür entschieden, auf englisch statt auf deutsch zu singen?

You’re singing in English. That’s good for starters if you want to be heard internationally. Did you already play gigs abroad? If yes, how was the feedback? Did you decide on purpose to sing in English rather than in German?

Ja irgendwie passte von Anfang an der englische Gesang besser zu unserem Sound obwohl ich gerne mal wieder auf deutsch singen würde. Vielleicht passiert das auch mal wieder aber momentan bleibts beim Englisch. Im Ausland waren wir leider noch nicht. Ich hoffe sehr das sich das bald ändert. Hey Australia…can you hear us..

Yes, from the start somehow English was a better match with our sound. Although I would love to sing in German again. Maybe it will happen one day but we’ll stick to English for now. Unfortunately, we haven’t done any shows abroad yet. I really hope that this will change soon. Hey Australia…can you hear us..

 

Welcher Cherry Bomb Song ist dein Lieblingssong und warum?

Which Cherry Bomb song is your favorite and why?

Meist ist immer der Song mein Liebling den wir gerade frisch fertig gestellt haben…aber zu “Glory Days of Hate” habe ich eine besondere Affinität weil ich da mit einem Thema aufräumen kann das mich besonders in meiner Heimatstadt beschäftigt: wenn eine “Szene-Polizei” das Leben anderer bewertet und als Maßstab ihr eigenes, zum Teil groteskes Dasein benutzt…

Usually, my favorite is always the song that we’ve just completed… but I have a special affinity for “Glory Days of Hate” because I can do away with a topic that really bothers me in my home town: when a “scene police” evaluates other people’s life and take their own, partly grotesque existence as a benchmark…

 

Welche Band/ Musiker sind eure persönlichen Helden?

Which band/ musician(s) are your personal heroes?

Oh Gott, wo soll ich anfangen??? Mit “kill your idols”? Haha…nein es gibt so viele großartige Musiker die wir bewundernswert finden und das nicht nur aus dem Punkrockbereich aber es gibt natürlich so ein paar Bands die zum Soundtrack des Lebens gehören: NOFX, Cocksparrer, Buzzcocks, the Hellacopters, Turbonegro, Razzia, Daily Terror, 4Promille, Slapshot, Yuppicide, SchleimKeim…und so weiter…

Dear lord, where shall I start??? With “kill your idols”? Haha…no there are so many awesome musicians that we admire and they are not only from the punk genre. But there are of course some bands that belong to the soundtrack of life: NOFX, Cocksparrer, Buzzcocks, the Hellacopters, Turbonegro, Razzia, Daily Terror, 4Promille, Slapshot, Yuppicide, SchleimKeim…and the list goes on…

 

Wie laufen eure Proben normalerweise ab? Gebt uns einen Einblick in Cherry Bombs Alltag…

How do your rehearsals look like? Please provide an insight in Cherry Bomb’s daily life…

Also wir proben einmal die Woche ca. 4Stunden…wir spielen dann ein-zwei Songs aus dem Set und dann gehts an neues Material…meistens habe ich zu Hause schon irgendwas fertig, eine Hookline oder ein Riff oder einen kompletten Song, das gehe ich dann mit Tiffi unserem Drummer ein paar Mal durch damit das Grundgerüst steht auf dem wir dann aufbauen. Also drei Stunden proben wir wirklich intensiv und dann jammen wir meist noch ne Runde oder tauschen untereinander die Instrumente…auf jeden Fall soll es Spass machen! Unter der Woche gehen wir alle normal arbeiten, Tiffi ist Beleuchter beim Film, Dr. Waldi ist wirklich ein Dr. der Biologie, Ironboy macht verschiedene Sachen und ich bin Tätowierer…

Well, we rehearse once a week for about 4 hours…we play one or two songs from the set and then we work on new material… Usually, I have already prepared something at home, a hook line or a riff or a complete song, which Tiffi and I rehearse a few times so that we have a foundation on which we can build on. We rehearse intensively for three hours and then, we jam a bit or we exchange instruments… as long as it’s always fun! Throughout the week, we all have normal jobs. Tiffi is a lighting technician for films, Dr Waldi is really a doctor of biology, Ironboy does do several things and I’m a tattoo artist…

 

Abgesehen von den Konzerten, was ist euer Plan dieses Jahr – sind vielleicht neue Songs in Mache?

Apart from the concerts, what’s your plan for this year – are there any new songs in the making?

Ja es sind auf jeden Fall neue Songs am Start, Ziel ist es im Frühjahr 2013 wieder ins Studio zu gehen um das dritte Album zu produzieren…die Hälfte haben wir schon und wir sind echt heiss drauf das neue Material zu präsentieren.

Yes, there are definitively new songs. Our goal is to go back to the studio in Spring 2013 in order to produce the third record… we already have half of the songs and we are keen to present the new stuff.

 

Da wir in Sydney basiert sind, interessiert es uns, was ihr so über die australische Musikszene wisst. Ich hoffe, das ist mehr als nur AC/DC… 

Since we’re based in Sydney, we would like to find out what you know about the Australian music scene. I hope you can come up with more than just AC/DC…

…und Midnight Oil und INXS haha…außer Rose Tattoo, the Living End und Guttersnipes fällt mir ehrlich gesagt nicht viel ein…Nick Cave…naja das Überangebot an europäischen Bans ist ja schon enorm und die Entfernung macht das Touren von hierzulande unbekannteren Bands ja auch schwierig.

…and Midnight Oil and INXS haha…apart from Rose Tattoo, the Living End and Guttersnipes I can’t think of anything else, to be honest. Nick Cave… Well, the overwhelming amount of European bands is already quite enormous and the long distance makes it hard for not well-known bands to go on tour.

 

Welche Bands aus eurer Umgebung könnt ihr uns denn noch ans Herz legen?

Which bands from your area would you recommend?

Das hättest du mich mal vor nem halben Jahr fragen sollen, da gabs drei Bands aus unserer unmittelbaren Nachbarschaft die richtig geil waren…mittlerweile haben die sich aber wieder aufgelöst. Aber wenn ich schonmal die Chance habe Bands aus meiner Stadt international zu supporten dann erwähne ich hier: Dönerpunks, Sunna Sepdoom, Settle Down, Glasscage, Kill Festar, Quietschbois, thee Flanders…

You should have asked me that question half a year ago. There were three bands from our direct neighbourhood that were really wicked…but they’ve all split up already. But when I already get the chance to support bands from my home town internationally, I would like to mention: Dönerpunks, Sunna Sepdoom, Settle Down, Glasscage, Kill Festar, Quietschbois, thee Flanders…

 

Was sollten unsere (australischen) Leser unbedingt wissen? Was könnt ihr uns mit auf den Weg geben?

Would should our (Australian) readers know / be aware of? What can you recommend?

Ihr solltet unbedingt wissen das es hier in Deutschland eine Band gibt die unbedingt mal bei euch spielen möchte, nämlich wir CHERRY BOMB!!! …vielen Dank für euer Interesse, hört doch mal bei uns rein und ansonsten habt Spass, geniesst euer Leben.
